Congratulations to Dr Jean Baptiste Bibie Yaro who successfully defended his thesis on Monday 24th May 2021

Project Title: Risk factors for malaria infection in children in rural south-west Burkina Faso an area with high pyrethroid-resistant vectors

Objectives: 1) To identify human risk factors for malaria infection in children in a cohort study. 2) To describe risk factors related to use of malaria interventions (LLINs & antimalarial usage) during a cross-sectional study.

Supervisors: Prof. Steve Lindsay, Durham University, UK, Dr Alfred B Tiono, University of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and Dr Anne Wilson, Durham University, UK and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK.

Jean Baptiste Bibie YARO is a research scientist at Centre National de Recherche et de Formation sur le Paludisme (CNRFP). His research focuses on public health, specifically the control of vector borne diseases.

In 2021, he graduated with a PhD in Epidemiology from Durham University, UK. His doctoral research formed part of the MiRA project, investigating the impacts of insecticide resistance on current malaria control tools in Burkina Faso. Specifically, his work focused on risk factors for malaria infection in children in rural south-west Burkina Faso. His work suggests that additional interventions are needed to improve malaria control in Burkina Faso, such as Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) and improved housing conditions.

Jean has worked on several malaria drug (Phase I - IV) and vaccine (Phase I and IIb, viral vectors vaccine with ChAd63 ME-TRAP / MVA ME-TRAP) development trials. Outputs from his previous research on SMC in children in Burkina Faso, were used by the WHO in their SMC recommendations.
